NAVIANCE News #2 - Test Prep

E-mail Print
In the fall of 2012, the IHS Boosters purchased Naviance to help IHS students with college and career preparation. Naviance is a college and career readiness platform that helps connect academic achievement to post-secondary goals. Naviance helps students determine what careers may fall into their area of interest; helps them match their likes and dislikes to specific colleges in many diverse areas like school size, location, majors offered, etc.; helps them find relevant scholarships that may provide money to pursue their post-high school interests; and provides an excellent test prep service for students planning to take either the SAT or the ACT. The Boosters feel that this program will help our kids begin to prepare for life after high school by first helping them narrow down their areas of interest and then by helping them with the process of applying to college.

In this second installment of our Naviance Information Bulletin, we want to focus on Test Prep.  With the next SAT date coming up on 1/25 and the next ACT date coming up on 2/8, this is a great time to remind your students that it will be beneficial to them to start test prep NOW.  The version of Naviance that IHS students have access to includes a great test prep program, called PrepMe.  This program would cost each student over $300 to purchase for their own use so this is a great addition to our Naviance offering.

PrepMe is a personalized, adaptive learning solution that allows students to focus on the skills needed to maximize their PSAT, SAT, and/or ACT scores. PrepMe gives schools the ability to deliver individualized test prep and skill-building tools that meets the unique needs of each student.
To learn more about PrepMe, go to http://www.naviance.com/marketplace/prepme

To access PrepMe:
1) Log into your Naviance account.
Note that only the student accounts have access to PrepMe, not the parent accounts.Sec
If your student does not remember their login information, please have them contact Ms. Haddad
2) On the home page, under Resources, click on "PrepMe" (this will open a separate window or tab)
3) Select the option for either the ACT course or the SAT course.
4) If you select the ACT course, you can choose:
English
Math
Reading
Science
If you select the SAT course, you can choose:
Math
Reading
Writing

It should be pretty self-explanatory from this point.  We have recommended to students that they try to use the program at least 10 minutes a day or an hour a week, whichever works for them.

The best preparation for the both the SAT and the ACT is practice so please encourage your students to use this valuable resource that has been provided to them.

NAVIANCE Introduction

This month, IHS Boosters volunteers are working with the majority of IHS seniors and juniors to show them how to use Naviance to help them, regardless of where they are in the college search/application process.  Such searches include:

  • Scholarship searches
  • SAT/ACT practice tests
  • College searches

The seniors and juniors were encouraged to play around with the different functions some more to further understand the Naviance capabilities.    The Boosters will be working with the sophomores and freshman in February.

All IHS students should have a Naviance ID.  In addition, each parent should have their own Naviance ID as well, although the parent functionality of the program is not as robust as the student’s. To log into Naviance (otherwise known as Family Connection), go to www.naviance.com, click on “Students & Families Sign In”, enter “89451” for the postal code, select “Incline High School” and enter your login information.   If you or your student is having trouble logging into Naviance, please contact Patty Haddad at  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ">  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

For a good overview of Naviance, we suggest viewing the YouTube video entitled “Intro to Naviance”.  The functions that we showed the seniors and juniors include:

  • Cluster Finder found under the About Me tab (to help determine areas of interest for post-college careers)
  • SuperMatch College Search found under the Colleges tab (to match specific colleges to a set of criteria determined by the student),
  • National Scholarship Search found under the Colleges tab (to find a list of potential scholarships that can be applied for)
  • Prep Me found under HOME (to make use of the SAT and ACT test preparation).

We plan to send out more detailed information task by task so parents and students further understand the robust capabilities of this great tool, but for now we encourage parents to sit down with their students and explore the many things Naviance has to offer.  (Please note that we hope to have local scholarship opportunities listed in Naviance soon.  They will be listed under “Scholarship Match” under the Colleges tab – for now that section is blank.)  We hope the students and parents get great benefit out of this tool funded by the Boosters.
